The average course elevation is 10,282 feet and the highest point reaches 12,438 feet on the Colorado Trail. A 38 hour overall cutoff is in effect.

The route travels over rugged, high country terrain with sustained ascents and descents and variable weather. Notable terrain and viewpoints include sections of the Colorado Trail and views of peaks such as Engineer Mountain, the Wilson group of 14ers, and Lizard Head.

Aid stations are positioned along the course and are listed as full or basic depending on services. Some aid stations allow crew access, drop bags, and pacers; pacers are permitted starting at the Cross Mountain aid station and may join again at Ryman Creek and Elbert Creek. Some aid stations provide hot food.

Runners must carry required safety gear including a rain jacket, two light sources, gloves, whistle, hat, water capacity, and a cup or bowl. Race staff may require rain pants depending on forecast and may require a tracker; required gear may be checked and failure to carry it can result in disqualification. Participants must be at least 18 years old. The race awards cash prizes to top finishers and organizers monitor wildfire and air quality risk, reserving the right to reroute or cancel if conditions are unsafe.
