San Juan Softie 100-mile Ultramarathon
The San Juan Softie is a 100 mile mountain ultramarathon that starts and finishes north of Durango, Colorado. The course follows high trails in the San Juan range and includes sections of the Colorado Trail, with an average elevation near 10,282 ft and a highest point of 12,438 ft. Total elevation gain is listed at about 19,000 ft.
Aid stations are placed along the route and are classified as Full or Basic; some allow crew access and drop bags, and some allow pacers at designated locations. The event enforces a 38 hour overall cutoff and publishes an aid station chart with cutoffs and distances between stations.
Navigation is supported by course markings (pink ribbons and staked flags with reflective tape) and by published GPX and map files; runners are advised to carry downloaded maps or route notes that function without cell service. Required mandatory gear includes a rain jacket, two light sources, gloves, whistle, hat, water capacity and a cup or bowl. Starting in 2026, satellite tracking is required. Poles and pacers are permitted under specific rules; pacers must complete a waiver and wear a pacer bib and may join at specified aid stations. Participants must be at least 18 years old.
The race is listed as sold out for 2026 and a waitlist is available. Prize money is awarded to the top three women and men. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
