Ultra Tour of Arran
The Ultra Tour of Arran is a two day off-road ultramarathon on the Isle of Arran covering 60 miles (97 km) in total. The route is run in two stages over consecutive days and includes substantial ascent on both days.
Distances
- 60 miles (97 km) total
- Day 1: 28 miles, about 3500 ft ascent
- Day 2: 30 miles, nearly 6000 ft ascent
The course uses a mix of surfaces: coastal paths, boardwalks, forest trails, glens, mountain passes and some tarmac through villages. Notable features include the summit of Goatfell and a peat area known as the Bog of Doom. Local residents and wildlife are commonly encountered along parts of the route.
The event is fully waymarked with orange arrows and blue flags and is supported by staff, pit stops and a sweeper service to move participants who withdraw. Day 1 has three pit stops and Day 2 has two pit stops at specified mile markers. A professional medical team is provided on site and medics operate in vehicles including a private ambulance.
Tracker collection and event registration take place at the Event Village in Ormidale Park, Brodick; participants must present their running pack so a tracker can be fitted. Mandatory kit is required and includes items such as trail running shoes, at least 2 litres of hydration capacity, waterproof jacket and trousers with taped or welded seams, a bivvi bag, basic first aid supplies, a satellite or GPS tracker supplied by the organiser, and a minimum of 400 kcal of emergency food.
Rat Race promotes a non competitive ethos: results are not presented in finishing order and there are no podium places. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
