Course, aid, and rules

The Single Loop is a hilly loop around the Twin Mountain massif that passes rock outcroppings and valleys. The route includes long stretches of thigh-deep snow, some ice, and about 2,000 feet of climbing. One unmanned, basic aid station is located roughly midway on the loop. Finish times cited by the organizer are around two hours for winners and three to five hours or more for other runners.

The Double Loop is two laps of the same loop, with the unmanned aid station encountered twice and a fully stocked aid station at the halfway point (start/finish) offering warm food. To start the second loop, runners must finish the first loop in under 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Rules: snowshoes, skis, and flotation devices are not allowed. Ski or trekking poles, traction devices (for example MicroSpikes or YakTrax), and grit are allowed. Mandatory gear, checked at registration and finish, includes 40 oz of fluids, 400 calories of food, firestarter, wind coat, long pants, warm hat, gloves or mitts, emergency whistle, mylar emergency blanket, and a headlamp or flashlight for the second loop. There is no exit from the loop until the finish; rescue may take hours. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
