Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK 50 Mile Relay and Ultra
The event is a weekend of trail races held in Rothrock State Forest, centered on a loop course that uses mostly unpaved fire roads and begins and ends with 0.6 miles of pavement. Courses include shaded and open segments, overlook vistas, and a mix of uphill, level, and downhill terrain. About the last 5 miles of the 50 mile route are on downhill pavement.
Distances offered include:
- 50 mile ultra and relay
- 50 km
- Half marathon
- Kids Fun Run
- Relays for teams of 2 to 8 runners
The 50 mile and 50 km share the first 19 miles. The 50 mile loop passes Whipple Dam State Park, Alan Seeger Natural Area, Penn-Roosevelt State Park, Colyer Lake, and Bear Meadows Natural Area. Total elevation gain for the 50 mile course is 5,485 ft.
Ultramarathon competitors have drop bag and support vehicle options. Stocked, staffed aid stations are positioned along the course about every 2.9 to 5.6 miles. Relay teams must provide one team vehicle, specify and maintain a fixed runner rotation, and exchange the baton at designated transition points. Categories for individuals and teams include male, female, non-binary, open age, and masters for those over 40 on race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
