Tussey Mountainback 50 Mile Ultra

Tussey Mountainback Race Weekend : Oct 25–26, 2025

The event takes place at Tussey Mountain Ski and Family Fun Center, 301 Bear Meadows Road, Boalsburg, PA. The weekend features multiple individual races and relay options. A pre-race luncheon is offered with limited seating and a fee; check-in and packet pickup are required for all runners and relay teams at the ski lodge. Drop bags for ultramarathoners are brought to the ski lodge. Raffle ticket sales occur during the weekend and winners are announced at the post-race celebration. Proceeds support the Jana Marie Foundation, a local nonprofit focused on youth mental well-being through dialogue and creative expression.

Courses and format

The 50-mile course is a USATF-certified loop on mostly unpaved fire roads through Rothrock State Forest. The 50M loop is described as 82% dirt and 18% paved, with uphill, level, and downhill segments, shaded and open stretches, and several overlook vistas. The loop passes Whipple Dam State Park, Alan Seeger Natural Area, Penn-Roosevelt State Park, Colyer Lake, and Bear Meadows Natural Area. Total elevation gain is 5,485 ft. Stocked, staffed aid stations are provided at predetermined locations every 2.9 to 5.6 miles. Ultramarathon options allow support vehicles and drop bags.

Relay teams use aid stations as transition points, must select and maintain a runner rotation order, and must provide one team vehicle to transport runners to transition points. The 100-mile course uses four loops of the half-marathon course (approx. 12.7-mile loop) before continuing on the 50-mile course.
