Trail Beer Mile Challenge

Roanoke, United States • 17 May 2026

Event Overview

The Trail Beer Mile Challenge is a recreational sports event held at the UAW Local 2209 Union Hall in Roanoke. Organized by the Getting Miles Athletic Club in partnership with UAW Local 2209, the event serves as a fundraiser for the UAW Local 2209 Veterans Committee to support local veterans.

Participants must be at least 21 years old on the day of the event and are required to have a designated driver. The registration fee includes the beverages required for the race.

Race Format and Rules

The competition requires participants to complete a total distance of one mile on a trail surface consisting of grass, dirt, or gravel. The course is structured as four laps around a loop of at least 400 meters. The sequence involves drinking one 12-ounce beverage in a designated transition zone, then running one lap, repeating this process four times until the finish line is crossed. Available event categories include:

  • Beer Mile
  • Light Beer Mile
  • Seltzer Mile
  • Fireball Mile

Specific regulations govern the drinking portion of the race. Beverages must be in standard cans or bottles and cannot be modified to speed up the pouring process; straws and "shotgunning" are prohibited. Each container must be opened only within the nine-meter transition zone. To ensure the drinks are finished, participants must tip their empty containers over a bucket for official inspection. If a container is not sufficiently empty, the runner must serve a 60-second penalty. Participants who vomit during the race are required to complete one penalty lap and one penalty drink at the end of their fourth lap.
