Event and course

Thunder River is a trail running event staged from Marine Park in Cascade Locks, Oregon, in the Columbia River Gorge. The event includes two distances:

  • 50K - mostly point-to-point course
  • 25K - purely point-to-point course

Both courses travel along the Pacific Crest Trail and the Gorge 400 trail, pass under the Bridge of the Gods into the town of Cascade Locks, and conclude with a trail loop around Thunder Island before finishing at Marine Park.

Logistics and services

The registration fee varies by period: the 50K is listed at $140 to $165 and the 25K at $110 to $135. A $10 shuttle bus fee applies for runners who use the shuttle from Marine Park to the start; runners may also be dropped at the Wyeth Trailhead by friends or family. There is no shuttle back to the start from the finish. Event parking is at Marine Park with a $10 daily parking fee charged by the Port of Cascade Locks; additional curbside parking is available on Wa Na Pa St.

Race services include a fully marked course, chip timing and live results, full service aid stations, professional medical support, radio communications, post-race food and beverages, custom finisher awards, and professional photography. Use of boot brushes is required by the U.S. Forest Service at check-in and start areas. A portion of race proceeds will be donated to Trailkeepers of Oregon. Trail races of 100K, 50K and 30K run in the Columbia River Gorge from Marine Park in Cascade Locks. The 100K is a Western States qualifier and the event includes Thunder Island camping plus marked courses and aid stations.
