The Three Shires Fell Race is an 'AL' category fell race, sponsored by OMM. The event date is a Saturday in September.

Course Details

The course has a new route for 2025, run anticlockwise. It covers a distance of approximately 22 km (12.4 miles) with a total climb of 1535 m (4003 ft). The race is part of the Lakeland Classics Trophy series.

The start and finish are at Tilberthwaite Farm. There are six main checkpoints along the route:

  • CP 1: Lingmoor
  • CP 2: Pike of Blisco
  • CP 3: Three Shires Stone
  • CP 4: Great Carrs
  • CP 5: Wetherlam
  • CP 6: Tarn at GR 294 993

Two flagged sections guide runners from the farm to the bottom of Lingmoor and from the top of Tilberthwaite Gill back to the finish, ensuring use of the southern path.

Practical Information

Entry is online via SI Entries, opening on 1st July and closing on a Wednesday in mid-September. There is a race limit of 350 participants, and no entries are accepted on the day. The entry fee is £16 for FRA members and £18 for non-members.

The event is run under Fell Running Association (FRA) rules. The use of GPS for navigation is not permitted. The event organizers emphasize that fell racing is dangerous and the race is a serious undertaking, requiring appropriate navigation skills, mountain craft, and equipment.

The FRA minimum mandatory kit must be carried. This includes a map, compass, whistle, full waterproof body cover, hat, and gloves. Emergency rations are advised.

Experience a traditional Lakeland fell race to the summit of Causey Pike. Organized by Keswick Athletic Club, this 7.2 km course features over 500 meters of ascent through the scenic Newlands Valley.

Explore the trails of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Natural Beauty. Choose from a 10k or a 21k half marathon, with competitive and non-competitive options. The event is dog-free and emphasizes sustainable practices.

The Muncaster Luck is a challenging 15km fell race with 620m of ascent over rough terrain. Entry is on the day for £5 cash. Runners must carry full mandatory kit and be prepared for tricky navigation and two river crossings.

A challenging fell race over 7.7 km with 365m of climb in the Lake District. Mandatory full kit is required, including waterproofs. Junior races are also available.
