Event Overview

The Three Forts Challenge offers a selection of trail races set in the South Downs, starting and finishing at the Lancing Manor Leisure Centre in West Sussex. The event features a mix of terrains including hills, chalk, flint, and gravel paths.

Participants can choose from three distinct distances:

  • Marathon (approx. 27 miles/43 km)
  • Half Marathon (approx. 13.1 miles/21 km)
  • 5 Mile Trail Run (approx. 8 km)

Course and Facilities

The routes are known for significant elevation changes, particularly in the early stages, and provide views across identifying landmarks such as Devil’s Dyke and Chanctonbury Ring. The marathon course has a 6-hour cut-off time, and the half marathon has a 3-hour cut-off at the 15.5-mile mark. Aid stations are positioned regularly along the course, offering water and various snacks like cakes, oranges, and sweets.

The event venue includes amenities such as a bag drop, showers, and a cafe. Post-race, participants receive a medal and a goody bag. The event organizers encourage environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing plastic use at water stations.

The race headquarters is located at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre on Manor Road. The site is accessible via the A27 at the Lancing Manor roundabout. Limited parking is available at the leisure centre. Experience a scenic 50 km loop through the South Downs starting from historic Arundel. This trail race features rolling hills, forest paths, and riverside tracks with full navigation marking and live GPS tracking.
