The Yomp - Sunset Stroll
The Sunset Stroll is part of The Yomp Mountain Challenge, a multi-day outdoor event held in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. The term "Yomp" is derived from a Royal Marines term for a long-distance march across open and often difficult terrain. This specific event takes place on the Friday evening of the festival weekend, preceding the longer distance races.
The course features a mix of roads and tracks, but the primary focus is on traversing the open and exposed fell side. Participants experience the landscape as the sun sets over the local fells, such as Tailbrigg. The event center and basecamp are located at Pennine View Park at The Engine Shed.
The Yomp is a volunteer-led charity event with a history dating back to 1983. All proceeds are donated to local causes and organizations, including the Great North Air Ambulance and the Northern Viaduct Trust. While the weekend includes various distances, the Sunset Stroll serves as the opening event for the festival.
There is no parking available directly at the event site. Free parking for participants is provided at Station Yard in Kirkby Stephen, which is located a short walk from the basecamp. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
