The Winter Gmu

Bristol, United Kingdom • 7 Mar 2026

Event

The Winter Green Man Ultra (Winter GMU) is a trail ultramarathon around the City of Bristol on the Community Forest Path. The event offers two formats:

  • 45 miles / 72 km
  • 30 miles / 48 km

Both distances use the same course and checkpoints, run in an anti-clockwise direction for the winter edition. The organiser is Ultra Running Limited / Every Mile Counts Ltd. Entry options include solo places, paired entries, and a double-entry option for both winter and summer 45 mile events.

Course, support and timing

The 45 mile race is a full loop with four checkpoints and about 3,100 ft (945 m) of ascent. The 30 mile race starts part way along the route, includes two checkpoints and about 1,900 ft (580 m) of ascent. Checkpoints provide water and a selection of food items; CP3 is served by The White Horse pub. The event is cup-free so competitors must bring a reusable cup. GPX files and written route directions are available for navigation. Timelords run to target times of 9, 10, 11 and 12 hours to help with pacing and navigation. Cut-off rules apply at checkpoints and overall time limits are enforced.

Rules, kit and awards

All entrants must be aged 20 or over and carry mandatory kit including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, printed maps or GPS, compass, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food and a basic first aid kit. Finishers receive a technical GMU T-shirt, a bespoke medal and a signed certificate. Runners who complete both the winter and summer 45 mile events in the same year receive a GMU buckle based on cumulative time (sub 15, sub 18, sub 21, sub 24 hours).
