The Summer GMU

The Summer Green Man Ultra is held on the Community Forest Path near Bristol and is offered in two distances. The event uses a clockwise route for both distances and shares checkpoints and the same finish location for each format.

  • 45 mile full clockwise loop starting and finishing at Ashton Park School just outside Bristol.
  • 30 mile partial clockwise loop starting at The White Horse, Hambrook, and finishing at Ashton Park School.

Checkpoints are provided along the route to monitor times and wellbeing and to offer water and food. Cut-off rules are in place so the route must be completed within the event time limits set by the organisers; finishers who complete within the stated overall time receive a signed certificate confirming entitlement to a Woodwose or a Woodwight. From 2026 the event includes competitor tracking. Finishers receive a bespoke Green Man medal and there is an option to purchase a technical race shirt.

Prizes and awards include trophies for podium positions in each race category, veteran awards, and free entry into the following year for the first male and female in each distance. Competitors who complete both the summer and winter 45 mile events in the same year are eligible for a GMU buckle based on cumulative running time across the two events.

Entry is by online registration. Fees are non refundable. Entrants must be aged 20 or over and must carry mandatory kit including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, appropriate maps or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food and a basic first aid kit.
