Ancient Trail Ultra Marathon
The Peddars Way Ultra is an approximately 48-mile point-to-point race that follows an ancient Pre-Roman trading route through Suffolk and Norfolk. The course begins at Knettishall Heath Nature Reserve and travels north to finish at Holme-next-the-Sea on the Norfolk Coast. The terrain consists of a mixture of straight tracks, bridleways, footpaths, and quiet country roads.
The route is relatively flat and follows well-marked National Trail signage including finger posts and acorn markings. Participants are also provided with GPS files for navigation. Due to the winter timing, some sections like the early boardwalks may be slippery or underwater, and a specific wet-weather diversion may be implemented depending on local conditions.
The event includes several support features and requirements:
- 48 miles
There are three intermediate checkpoints located at roughly regular intervals, as well as a final station at the finish. Facilities vary by location, with indoor options and hot food available at specific points like Castle Acre and the finish line. This is a cupless event, meaning participants must carry their own reusable drinking vessels.
Safety measures include mandatory kit requirements such as waterproof clothing with taped seams, a headtorch, and a minimum of one liter of water capacity. All runners are issued a GPS tracker at registration, allowing friends and family to monitor their progress online. A shuttle bus service is available for those who wish to park their vehicles at the finish and travel to the start line. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
