The Pathfinder March
The Pathfinder March is an annual long-distance event covering a circular route of 46 miles (74 kilometres) through the Cambridgeshire countryside. The course visits the four historic former airbases of the Royal Air Force Pathfinder Force, which served a specialized role during the Second World War. The event starts and finishes at RAF Wyton Airfield, the location of the first Pathfinder mission.
Participants can choose to complete the distance as a solo runner or walker, or enter as a team to complete the route as a relay. The route passes through several villages and landmarks, including:
- RAF Wyton Airfield
- Godmanchester
- Graveley
- Papworth Everard
- Elsworth
- Dry Drayton
- Oakington Airfield
- Warboys Airfield
The course features eight physical checkpoints where participants can have a recording card punched. Navigation is a key component of the event; while route markers and signs are displayed, basic navigation skills are required. Organizers provide a route description leaflet, but participants are encouraged to carry an OS Explorer 225 map and a compass.
As an arduous long-distance challenge, participants must be at least 18 years old. All those who complete the event receive a finisher's medal and a t-shirt. There are specific closing times for each checkpoint along the route, and all participants must finish or withdraw by a designated time late in the evening. Parking is available at the venue near the start and finish area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
