The Old Crown Round

The Old Crown Round is an FRA category AL fell race based at the Old Crown Pub in Hesket Newmarket. The route is a 36 km loop of the higher Northern Fells with approximately 2200 m of ascent and includes road, track, paths, open fields and extensive open fell. Navigational skill is essential as there are sections with no paths.

Checkpoints are placed on Carrock Fell, Blencathra, Skiddaw House, Skiddaw summit, Knott and High Pike. There is a cut off on Carrock Fell; runners have 70 minutes to reach that summit. Three flagged river crossings are provided and each crossing will be marshalled. Skiddaw House is a compulsory checkpoint and may offer shelter and water.

This is an AL category race and mandatory kit is required. The FRA minimum kit includes a waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, a physical map and a traditional non electronic compass, whistle and emergency food. The use of GPS devices or electronic compasses for navigation is not permitted. Organisers may request a long sleeve thermal layer depending on conditions. Poles are only allowed for competitors who would otherwise be unable to take part.

Entry is by pre entry via SiEntries with separate member and non member fees. Camping is available in the village field and the event car park is charged at a small fee. Registration includes a full kit check and confirmation of emergency contact details. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
