The Martian Race

The Martian Race is a volunteer organised series of off-road races put on by the Woking Lions. The event donates its proceeds to local charities and raised over £20,000 from the most recent run. The organisers aim to improve on past results in 2026. The race is in its seventh year and the route passes through the historic sandpits on Horsell Common, the location used in H. G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds.

Horsell Common is privately owned common land with public access and almost half is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Routes run across heathland, meadow, wetlands, woodland and boardwalks. Some sections include tree roots and narrow paths. The event is marshalled by volunteers and the organisers state they choose routes to respect local flora and fauna and to minimise environmental impact. Races are described as litter free and there is a pledge to avoid single use plastics.
