The Martian Race

Woking, United Kingdom • 21 Jun 2026

Event overview

The Martian Race is an annual running event at Horsell Common, Woking. The 2026 event is scheduled for 21 June 2026 and this will be the race’s seventh year. The route passes through the historic sandpits on Horsell Common, the location referenced in H.G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds. The race is organised entirely by volunteers, many of whom are local runners, and all proceeds are distributed to local charities selected by the Woking Lions. The last run raised over £20,000 for local charities.

Horsell Common is privately owned common land with public access; almost half of the common is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Organisers state that routes are chosen to respect local flora and fauna, races are kept litter free, and there is a pledge to avoid single-use plastics.
