The Longbridge 100 Backyard Ultra
The Longbridge 100 is a backyard ultra held near Alfriston. It follows the last-person-standing format: competitors must begin a new lap on the hour, every hour, and each loop must be completed within that hour to count. The course is at least 4.2 miles (6.78 km) long and runs on a mix of single paths and farm access roads with chalky flint and gravel underfoot. The winter route has about 180 m of elevation gain and the summer route about 190 m.
The event enforces specific rules: a fixed-size starting corral, mandatory presence inside the corral when the bell rings, no late starts, no leaving the course during a loop except for restrooms, no non-competitors on the course, no personal aid during a lap, and no artificial aids such as trekking poles. Each runner must wear a running watch to record loops. A token must be collected at the second turnaround on every lap and returned to race HQ; failure to return the token results in disqualification. Lap times are recorded using the Webscorer app and manual backup.
Entries are limited (maximum 50) with a reserved waiting list. Entry includes a covered barn area for runners and support crews, basic aid station supplies, dedicated first aid, toilets, and bespoke mementos for all finishers and the last person standing. The event applies several sustainability measures, including reduced single-use plastic, refill stations, local sourcing, and shuttle transfers from the nearby train station.
