Coastal Trail Running in South Wales
The Dragon Coastal Races take place along the Wales Coast Path, offering three distinct distances that follow the shoreline toward a common finish at Cardiff Bay. The routes utilize non-technical trails, sandy beaches, and coastal paths. All participants finish at the Norwegian Church by the Captain Scott Memorial after crossing the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
Distance Options
Participants can choose from three linear routes:
- 100 miles: Starts at Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsula, featuring approximately 3400 meters of ascent. The route passes through the Afan Forest and Margam Park.
- 50 miles: Starts at Kenfig Nature Reserve, involving approximately 1300 meters of ascent. It includes the sand dune systems of Merthyr Mawr.
- 30 miles: Starts at Dunraven Bay, with approximately 460 meters of ascent, following the Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
Course Logistics and Support
The routes are marked with Wales Coast Path signs, supplemented by arrows, tape, and luminous flags in specific sections. Runners receive a GPS file and a marked map for navigation. Aid stations are positioned along the courses:
- 12 checkpoints for the 100 mile race.
- 7 checkpoints for the 50 mile race.
- 4 checkpoints for the 30 mile race.
For the 100 mile distance, runners have access to drop bags at designated points, including a mid-way point at Kenfig. The event provides optional bus transport from the finish line in Cardiff Bay to the various start locations for an additional fee.
Requirements and Safety
A compulsory kit list is mandatory for all runners regardless of weather conditions. While there are no strict qualification repeats, it is recommended that 100 mile entrants have completed a 40-50 mile ultra race previously. All courses have specific cut-off times at checkpoints and must be completed by midnight on Sunday. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
