Trail Running in the South Downs
The Sussex Downs Trail Run takes place within the South Downs National Park in Mid-Sussex. The event is based at Plumpton Racecourse, situated at the base of the South Downs. This location provides access from nearby areas including Brighton, Lewes, Haywards Heath, and Burgess Hill via the A27 and A23.
Participants can select from three different trail distances:
- 21 km (Half Marathon)
- 12 km
- 9 km
The courses begin with a flat 3.5 km section lined with trees. Following this initial segment, the routes feature a steep ascent leading up to the South Downs Way. From the higher elevations, the trails offer views of the Sussex countryside, the Seven Sisters Country Park, and the sea. The middle portion of the race consists of a loop on firm trails toward Brighton before returning to the South Downs Way.
The final stages of the run involve a descent from the hilltop followed by a flat 3 km stretch leading to the finish line. Open to various experience levels, the event provides participants with a medal, a drink, and finisher items upon completion of their chosen distance.
