Sunflower Stride
The Sunflower Stride is an evening trail running event located at the Dorset Sunflower Trail near Dorchester. The event features two main distances:
- 5 km (approximate distance, 110 m elevation)
- 10 km (approximate distance, 222 m elevation)
The 5 km route is open to runners aged 13 and above who are accompanied by an adult, while the 10 km is open to participants aged 16 and above. Both routes begin in a large grass car park and lead runners through rows of sunflower plants before joining bridleways. The courses continue toward Maiden Castle, a large hill fort, offering views of Weymouth and Hardy's Monument.
The terrain consists of a variety of surfaces, including hills, pasture land, stubble fields, and narrow, twisty sections through the sunflowers. The 10 km route includes two road crossings and an aid station located approximately halfway through the course. This is a cupless event, so participants must bring their own hydration vessels to use at the water station.
The event supports the Dorset County Hospital Emergency and Critical Care Appeal. After the run, participants receive a sunflower-themed medal, and trophies are awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each race. On-site facilities include a licensed bar, food options such as a hog roast, and restrooms. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
