Sun Mountain 50M, 50K and 25K - Winthrop, WA
Sun Mountain is a trail running event held in Winthrop, Washington on May 1 and 2, 2027. The races start and finish at Big Twin Lake Resort Campground with a lakeside finish and a post race pizza and music gathering. All participants are shuttled from the campground to the race start and official race camping is available at Big Twin.
The event includes these distances:
- 50M: about 8200 ft gain, 6 aid stations, 15+ hour cutoff
- 50K: about 5000 ft gain, 4 aid stations, 13+ hour cutoff
- 25K: about 2300 ft gain, 2 aid stations, 6+ hour cutoff
Courses run on the sunnyside of the North Cascades along Moccasin Lake Ranch, Elbow Coulee, the Twisp River Valley, the Sun Mountain trail system and Patterson Mountain. Surfaces are a mix of single track, wider ranch roads and some low traffic dirt and paved roads. The 25K includes about 2 miles of pavement, while the 50M and 50K include about 4.8 miles of pavement. Trails are described as mostly gradual and runnable with some steep climbs and a few technical sections.
The routes are well marked with ribbons and arrow signs; runners are advised to carry a map or GPS backup. Aid stations provide water, electrolyte drink, soda, energy gels, fruit, sandwiches and snacks. Dogs are not allowed on the race course; leashed dogs are allowed at the Big Twin finish area. The activity operates under a special use permit with the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and takes place on ancestral tribal lands.
