Sterling Down and Dirty 5k at Sterling Community Center

The Sterling Down and Dirty 5k Obstacle Race is an annual family friendly 5k held at Stratford Short Beach in September. The 2026 event is scheduled for September 5, 2026, at Stratford Short Beach, 1 Dorne Dr, Stratford, CT. The course runs along the beach and includes sand, water, and mud elements.

Participants may run, walk, skip, or dance through a course that features more than 18 obstacles. Entrants can choose to compete or complete the course more casually; fundraising is integrated into participation, with individual and team options and fundraising milestones that earn event swag.

Proceeds support Sterling Community Center programs, services, and the Resource Connection Program. Event organizers report an impact of $250,000 raised toward programs, services, and financial aid, and typically more than 300 people, families, and children participate each year.

Teams are organized into categories such as General Teams, Sterling Spirit Teams, School Teams, and Corporate Teams. Awards include recognitions for Most Team Spirit and Most Funds Raised. Sponsorship levels are offered with specified benefits, including Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and a Small Business Slalom option. Organizers provide downloadable images and social media templates to help participants promote fundraising efforts. Volunteers serve as obstacle facilitators and course guides.
