Steel Rail Races

The Steel Rail Races take place in May on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, with start and finish at the Adams Visitors Center in Adams, MA. The event includes multiple out-and-back race courses that follow the rail trail and benefit the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail and the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Distances offered:

  • Marathon (26.2 miles)
  • Half marathon
  • 8K
  • Mo’s Mile kids races: half mile for ages 6 and under, one mile for ages 7–12

Runners receive a technical short sleeve shirt and a finisher medal. Post-race provisions include a food bag, race photos, and a post-race party with live music; a free beer is available at the finish for participants aged 21 and over. The event provides aid stations and water stops along the course and uses timing chips attached to bibs; chips must be visible and are collected after the race for reuse.

The race awards overall top three male and female finishers in each race and age-category prizes. Wheelchairs and assisted push strollers are welcomed with prior coordination; baby strollers and dogs are not allowed on race day. Since 2012 the event has donated funds for trail maintenance, totaling over $65,000. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
