Steel Rail Races
The Steel Rail Races are held annually in May on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail in Massachusetts. The event features multiple distances following out and back routes that start and finish at the Adams Visitors Center. All courses utilize the rail trail, which remains open to the public during the event, meaning runners may encounter cyclists and other trail users.
The event offers the following race distances:
- Marathon (USATF certified course)
- Half Marathon (USATF certified course)
- 8K
- Mo Mile Kids Run (held the day before the main races, featuring a half mile for ages 6 and under and a one mile for ages 7-12)
The marathon course has a 6-hour time limit based on permit-related road closures, with course support and timing ending at 1:30 pm. Participants receive a technical short sleeve shirt, a finisher medal, and a post-race food bag. An awards ceremony recognizes the top three male and female overall finishers in each race, as well as the top finishers in age categories ranging from under 12 to over 70.
The event prohibits baby strollers and dogs on the course. While wheelchairs and disabled push strollers are permitted, participants are asked to coordinate with organizers in advance. Proceeds from the event are used for the maintenance and future expansion of the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
