St Andrews West Sands 5km, Chariots of Fire beach race

Each September the University of St Andrews Athletics and Cross Country Club hosts the first Scottish Student Sport cross country winter league event of the year in St Andrews, known as the Chariots of Fire beach race. The event is a regular fixture in the club’s calendar and takes place on the town’s West Sands.

The race is a 5 km out and back run along the beach. The course runs along sand and returns along the same route, giving a straightforward layout for runners and teams. The event brings together student competitors from universities across Scotland to race as part of the student cross country season.

The race is presented as part of the university club’s competition programme and sits alongside the club’s other cross country, road, and hill events. As the opening SSS cross country event in September, it acts as an early season race for university teams and contributes to the wider student cross country league calendar in Scotland.
