Squatchapple is a trail running event at the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ on March 7, 2026. The start and finish area for all distances is the Tulip Springs Trailhead on Cherry Lane, which includes a large parking lot, a covered pavilion for aid and check-in, and porta johns on site and at loop midpoints. Organizers provide an aid station at the pavilion; participants return to the lot after each loop. Pacers are permitted at sunset for all participants, and may accompany runners over age 60 or athletes with disabilities at any time.

The course uses three loops that all start and finish at Tulip Springs and must be completed in the listed order. Loop details:

  • 4 mile Turtleback Loop, pink ribbons, 370 ft gain, 75% carriage roads, 25% singletrack.
  • 5.5 mile Locust Grove Loop, checkered ribbons, 600 ft gain, 90% carriage roads, 10% singletrack; includes a steep technical climb on the Lenape Trail.
  • 7 mile Mayapple Loop, blue ribbons, 960 ft gain, mixed surfaces with two legal road crossings.

Total elevation gain by distance is published for each distance. Finishers receive a handcrafted wood medal and an item choice from the Squatch Shop. Charity bibs require raising or donating $350 to the South Mountain Conservancy by March 5. Hardship entries and partnerships with the Trail Mix Fund are available to assist registrations.
