Spring Backyard Burn Trail Run - Wakefield Park

The Spring Backyard Burn at Wakefield Park is part of a series of 5 and 10 mile trail races in Northern Virginia. The Wakefield event is scheduled for Sunday March 1, 2026, and takes place at Wakefield Park in Annandale, VA.

The course mixes narrow singletrack hiking trails, wider doubletrack trails, small sections of pavement, grassy fields, and several shallow stream crossings. The event is offered as either a single lap or two laps of the course, with modest elevation gain.

Distances

  • 5.5 miles (one lap)
  • 10 miles (two laps)

Elevation gain is listed as 250 feet for one lap and 500 feet for two laps. Race operations include professional timing and staffing, aid stations, medical support, volunteers, post-race food including breakfast burritos, music, awards and give-aways, and a series race t-shirt. Finisher medals are available as an optional add-on, and racers who complete all four races in the series receive a special medal at no additional cost.

A separate kids race is offered for ages 2 to 11 with age groups and a short out-and-back format; there is also a pre-registered kids program that provides supervised nature and STEM activities for an additional fee. Registration materials note a charity partnership with Homestretch and options to support the organization.

Race rules include no in-ear headphones, no pets or pacers on course, visible race numbers, outside assistance only near aid stations, and a requirement to stay on designated trails. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
