Speewah Legend Foot Race
This trail running event takes place in the Speewah area near Kuranda. The courses go into Barron Gorge National Park via the Djina Wu track, following traditional pathways.
The park covers 2820 hectares and features tropical rainforest and mountain heath. It is a wildlife corridor. Runners might see possums, tree kangaroos, cassowaries, and other native animals.
The event offers three course distances:
- 17 km: The longest course includes Smiths Track, Yalbogie Track, the Kauris, Toby’s Lookout, Gandul Wandun, Glacier Rock, and Douglas Tracks.
- 8 km
- 4 km
All trails loop back to finish at the Speewah Campground. All courses are marked, but runners are advised to have a good idea of the route. The event celebrates the local legend of Crooked Mick and the Speewah.
The Speewah Campground is an open grassy area among rainforest trees. Facilities include drinking water, picnic tables, gas barbecues, flushing toilets, and cold showers. Drinking water is not provided on the course; competitors must be self-reliant. Natural water sources are available on the 17 km course. Mobile phone coverage is not reliable across most of the course.
Participants are asked to bring their own race food, hydration pack or bottle, and their own plate for post-run food. A snake bandage is recommended. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
