Kuranda to Port Douglas Race (K2PD)

The K2PD is a point-to-point trail race held in August that runs from near Kuranda to Port Douglas. The route leaves just off the Kennedy Highway in Kuranda, follows Black Mountain Road and the Bump track, and finishes at Port Douglas. The course traverses native rainforest, open eucalypt forest and pine plantations, and it crosses several creeks. The route lies within Mowbray National Park inside the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The pyramid-shaped Black Mountain is a prominent feature along the course. The tropical rainforest along the route is habitat for the endangered southern cassowary, a flightless bird that can grow to two metres in height.

The event is offered as a non-certified trail distance in two formats:

  • 64 km solo
  • 64 km team relay for 2 to 4 runners

Logistics note: the start is on Black Mountain Road, approximately 200 m from the Kennedy Highway turn off. The drive from Cairns Esplanade and the CBD to the start takes about 30 minutes and there is street parking at the start. Organisers provide transport options to the start line and return transport to cars parked at Smithfield Shopping Centre.

The next scheduled edition is on 23 August 2026. The inaugural race was held on 28 August 2011. Registrations are listed as open for the upcoming event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
