Kuranda to Port Douglas Race (K2PD)
K2PD is a point to point trail race held in August. The course starts near the Kennedy Highway in Kuranda and follows Black Mountain Road and the Bump track to Port Douglas. The route passes through native rainforest, open eucalypt forest and pine plantations, and crosses several creeks within Mowbray National Park in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
The race is offered as a non certified solo event of 64 km or as a 64 km team relay for teams of two to four runners. Organisers are Dynamic Running Ltd from 2014 onwards; earlier events were run by Cairns Road Runners from 2011 to 2013. The inaugural event took place on 28 August 2011.
Black Mountain is a prominent pyramid shaped feature on the course. The tropical rainforest along the route is habitat for the endangered southern cassowary, a large flightless bird that can grow to about two metres in height. Event information materials include a competitor information pack, race briefing, event rules, support crew information and a course map.
Organisers aim to run the original 64 km course incorporating the Twin Bridges Track; if that is not possible the event may use a 60 km course. The start area is approximately 200 metres from the Kennedy Highway turn off, with street parking nearby and organized transport options to the start and back to cars parked at Smithfield Shopping Centre. The next listed date is 23 August 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
