South Wales - Christmas Advent Run 2026

Phoenix Running South Wales stages the Christmas Advent Run at Rhydycar in Merthyr Tydfil, based at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre and using the Taff Trail. The route is entirely tarmac and is officially measured and AUKCM certified for road classification.

The event is organised as a lap format on a 5.3 km out-and-back course that uses two turnaround points. Each lap includes 63 m of elevation gain and loss. Participants may complete as many or as few laps as they wish within the overall seven hour event time.

Distances offered include:

  • 5.3 km (one lap, 3.28 miles)
  • Examples by completing multiple laps: 5 km, 10 km, half marathon, marathon, ultra

Support and event services include an aid station, same-day results, athlete profiles, digital bibs and digital finisher certificates. There is a no medal entry option at a flat fee that provides the same support but no physical medal. Entry fees listed include affiliated and unaffiliated rates and a separate no medal price. Places are strictly limited and a UKA race licence has been applied for. Distance restrictions apply to participants ages 20 or under in line with UK Athletics rules. Trail runs nearby

Trail races on the private Merthyr Mawr Estate within Merthyr Mawr Warren National Nature Reserve, featuring a 12K course and a new 40K route that extends along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

Three coastal trail races follow the Wales Coast Path to a shared finish at Cardiff Bay, offering 100 miles, 50 miles and 30 miles routes with marked navigation, checkpoints and drop bag support.

Multi-distance runs along the Wye Valley Greenway, including a long lit tunnel section. Mostly flat routes on former railway track with feed stations, clear marking and event medals for 5 km or longer.

A 100 km race on the Beacons Way through the Brecon Beacons with 3,178 m ascent. Self-navigation with map and compass is mandatory and entrants must meet qualifying experience and kit requirements.
