Sourton Tors Fell Race

The event is a traditional fell race held on open Dartmoor moorland, starting and finishing at Sourton Village Hall near Okehampton on the A386. The senior route is just under 5 km with approximately 276 m of ascent. The course goes up to Sourton Tors, loops around the "Lake" valley and returns to the village hall. The route is entirely off-road and includes compulsory checkpoints near the Ice Works, the trig point at Sourton Tors, the descent to Lake Moorgate and the pit south west of the tors.

Distances:

  • Senior route about 5 km with 276 m ascent
  • Under 13: 3 km marked route
  • Under 11: 2 km marked route

The race is held under the rules of the Fell Runners Association and has classification AS. Self-navigation is required; there are some course markers. Runners unfamiliar with the course should carry a map and compass and know how to use them. If weather conditions are poor, a whistle, raincoat and hat are advisable. There are no mementoes and entry fees reflect this. Prizes are awarded for first male and female and for age categories. Parking is provided in a farmers field behind the Highwayman Inn with marshals directing vehicles; please do not park beside the village hall. Total places are limited to 150.
