Sourton Tor Race

The Sourton Tor Race takes place on 13 September 2025 at Sourton Village Hall, on the A386 near Okehampton. The event is held under Fell Runners Association rules and is classified AS. The senior race is a traditional fell run that starts from the moorgate and finishes next to the race headquarters. Total places are limited to 150. This event is the last race of the summer series.

Course, categories and entry

The senior course is approximately 5 km with about 276 m of ascent, entirely off-road across Dartmoor moorland. Compulsory checkpoints are located near the Ice Works, the trig point at Sourton Tors, the descent to Lake Moorgate and the pit south west of the tors. Runners must self-navigate; there are some course markers and carrying a map and compass is advised if not familiar with the route. The race is licensed by the Fell Runners Association. In poor weather a whistle, raincoat and hat are recommended.

Juniors are permitted with a minimum age of 8 and parental permission required on the entry form. Juniors over 13 may enter the senior course. All under-13 competitors race on a separate, marked route with distances:

  • 2 km for under 11
  • 3 km for under 13

On-the-day entries for juniors are £1, including those entered in the senior race. Parking is provided in a farmers field behind the Highwayman Inn; parking next to the village hall is discouraged. Prizes are awarded for first male, first female and age categories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
