Soup-In-The-Snow : event overview

Soup-In-The-Snow is a winter group run held by the Idaho Falls Trail Runners at the Palisades Creek Trailhead near Irwin, Idaho. The route is about 8.6 miles total, roughly 4.3 miles each way, and includes approximately 1,000 feet of snowy elevation gain on forested trails to Lower Palisades Lake and back. The course passes through snowy woods and near a mountain lake; moose have been noted in the area. The organizers describe the activity as more of a group run than a formal race.

Registration for the event is free and must be completed on ultrasignup; registration opens on Dec 1, 2025. There are no race prizes, no event tee-shirts, and no guaranteed aid stations on the course.

Practical details

The event includes a post-run potluck. Participants are asked to bring a food item to share (soup, bread, dessert, or side) and to indicate that item when completing registration. Generators and folding tables may be coordinated to warm soup or chili.

Trailhead parking is limited and carpooling is encouraged. Participants must bring their own eating utensils, bowls or mugs, and camp chairs. There is an outhouse at the trailhead if it is open, but toilet paper is not guaranteed. Additional event rules appear on the event waiver during registration.
