The event is a self navigation trail run held under UK Athletics rules with TRA Permit 8032. Two route options are offered and minimum age to participate is 17.

Participants receive a written route description on the day; there are no course markings, no marshals and no GPX file. The event is not a mass start. Runners will be timed out and must check back in at the finish. Race headquarters are at The Smugglers Den pub, 315 Ferry Rd, Hullbridge, Hockley SS5 6NA.

Entry fees are shown as £9 for affiliated runners and £11 for unaffiliated runners, plus a booking or service fee. Each entry includes a £4 voucher for the bar on the day. Closing date for entries is 06 Mar 2026. There are no refunds except if the race is cancelled. Results will be posted on essextrailevents.com.

To allow friends to run together it is possible to enter more than once in one name; in that case the organiser requires emergency contact details, a mobile phone number to be carried on the day, an email address and confirmation that each entrant agrees to the same terms and conditions before the closing date, otherwise they will not be allowed to participate.

Dark Rose is a 5.5 mile trail race around Great Waltham with a small 75 runner field and self navigation route given on the day. Finish back at the Rose and Crown for a hearty cottage pie or vegetable lasagne.

Nighttime street orienteering in Basildon as part of the Essex Winter Midweek Series 2025/26. MapRun is used and two score-format courses are offered with series points awarded using an age and gender handicap system.

Run the Wivenhoe 5 mile trail on 07 Feb 2026, starting and finishing at The Black Buoy pub near the station. Limited to 50 places, with a celebratory drink for finishers.

A winter trail run supporting Farleigh Hospice near Woodham Ferrers offering 10 km and half marathon routes on grass, tracks and paths, with written route instructions, cupless aid stations and on-site refreshments.
