Slieve Gullion Mountain Race
The Slieve Gullion Mountain Race is an established event first organized in 1973. It serves as a fixture in the NIMRA Championship under the Short category and acts as the opening race for the IMRA Ulster Championship. The event is organized by Armagh AC and takes place on Slieve Gullion.
Participants compete on a 3.9-mile course with a total elevation gain of 340 metres. The route starts on the north side of the mountain and follows a sequence of paths and open mountain terrain. Runners climb to the north cairn of Slieve Gullion before traversing the ridge toward the south cairn. The return leg follows the same path back to the start. Given the nature of the terrain, high-grip footwear is required, as the ridge path can become muddy in wet conditions.
The course is not marked, meaning participants must possess navigational skills or prior knowledge of the route, particularly if visibility is poor. Safety requirements stipulate that all runners must carry full body cover.
The event has an age restriction, with participants required to be 15 years or older on the date of the race. Entry fees are tiered based on affiliation with Athletics Northern Ireland (ANI). Registration takes place on the morning of the event near Ballard Cottage, accessible via the A25 and B30 from Newry. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
