Slieve Donard Race

The event is a mountain running race that starts at Newcastle Centre and finishes on the pitches in Donard Park, subject to permits. The course covers 10 km with approximately 850 m climb and follows roads and open ground in the Donard/Donard Forest Park area.

The route is not fully marked through forest sections and navigation skills or prior knowledge of the course are required, particularly on the descent. The Mourne Wall must not be crossed and runners must not cross tape at the top of the quarry. Checkpoints must be visited in order and numbers will be checked by marshals. Key checkpoints include the Saddle cairn (CP1), the Summit (CP2), Quarry Gate (CP3), and the footpath entrance to the overflow carpark (CP4).

Safety measures and controls are in place. There is a cut-off at 75 minutes to the Saddle; athletes may be escorted back to the finish by marshals if required. Mandatory kit includes a compass, whistle, waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, waterproof trousers, hat, and gloves. Kit checks will be made at the start and the finish; failure to carry required kit may lead to disqualification. No headphones or trekking poles are permitted.

Minimum age is 16. Entry is limited to 200 participants. Entries open 12 April 2026 and close 29 May 2026. Entry fees are listed as £15 affiliated and £17 unaffiliated. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
