Event Overview

The Slieve Donard race is a mountain running event held in Newcastle, County Down. The course covers a distance of 10 km with an ascent of 850 m. It serves as the opening race for the Irish Championship and the Irish Uphill League. The event also functions as a trial for athletes seeking to represent IMRA at the Snowdon International race.

The route begins at the Newcastle Centre on Main Street and follows the road to Donard Park. From there, the course is largely unmarked, requiring participants to utilize navigation skills and course knowledge, particularly during the descent through the forest. Runners must visit specific checkpoints in order, including the Saddle cairn, the Summit, and the Quarry Gate. Specific restrictions are in place, such as an absolute prohibition on crossing the Mourne Wall and specific areas at the top of the Quarry.

Participation Requirements

This event involves difficult terrain and a high level of ascent. Participants are expected to have a sufficient level of fitness, with a recommended benchmark of being able to complete a flat 10 km in 50 minutes. Cut-off times are strictly enforced at the Saddle for the safety of all involve.

Because of the mountain environment, advanced mandatory kit is required regardless of weather conditions at the start. Required items include:

  • Waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams
  • Waterproof full leg cover
  • Hat, gloves, and a whistle
  • Map of the area and a compass
  • Foil blanket or bivvy bag
  • A mobile phone with emergency numbers stored
  • Capacity to carry 500 mL of water and emergency food
