Slate Valley Scramble
Slate Valley Scramble is an annual trail run and fundraiser held at the Fairgrounds Trailhead in Poultney, Vermont. The event uses primarily singletrack and double-track trails through wooded terrain and open field sections on the Slate Valley Trails network.
Runners and hikers may choose from these distances:
- Half marathon
- 8K
- Kid's Fun Run (under 0.5 mile)
Both the half marathon and 8K include sections of flat terrain, rolling hills, and a few sustained climbs. The half marathon follows an approximate 9 mile loop on the Fairgrounds West trail system before joining the east-side loop; total elevation gain for the half is about 1500 ft. The 8K follows the Fairgrounds East trails with about 700 ft of climbing, with most climbing occurring between miles 2 and 3. Both courses return to the start/finish area by way of Maple Sugar.
Aid stations are cup-free and provide water and an electrolyte drink; fruit and light snacks are available. Runners are expected to carry a bottle for refilling. The half marathon has three aid station opportunities and a time cut-off at the 9 mile aid station; the 8K passes an aid station twice.
All finishers receive a finisher award. Top three finishers in open and female categories in both races receive awards. Post-race activities include an awards ceremony, snacks, and a raffle. Registration deadlines and volunteer opportunities are managed by the organizer; volunteers who register via RunReg receive an event t-shirt.
