Slate Valley Scramble, August 8, 2026, Poultney, Vermont

The 7th annual Slate Valley Scramble is a trail run and fundraiser organized by Slate Valley Trails. The event offers timed trail races and a short kids run on the Fairgrounds trail network in Poultney, Vermont. Start and finish are at the Fairgrounds Trailhead, 131 Town Farm Road.

Distances

  • Half marathon (13.1 miles) entirely on singletrack and double-track trails.
  • 8K (approximately 8 kilometers) entirely on singletrack and double-track trails.
  • Kid's Fun Run under 0.5 mile, for participants 12 years and younger.

Both main courses run through wooded, well maintained trails with variable terrain. The routes include flat sections, rolling hills, several hills and a few sustained climbs, and occasional views of Vermont’s Slate Valley. Total elevation gain is about 1500 feet for the half marathon and about 700 feet for the 8K, with most climbing on the 8K between miles 2 and 3.

Aid stations provide water, an electrolyte drink, fruit and light snacks. The event is cup free so runners should carry a bottle to refill at aid stations; cups are limited. No gels or chews will be supplied at aid stations.

All finishers receive a finisher award. Top three finishers in the open and female categories for each race receive awards. Post race activities include an awards ceremony, snacks, and a raffle. Volunteers who register and work roughly two to four hours receive an event shirt. Proceeds support the nonprofit Slate Valley Trails and trail maintenance. The organizer may cancel the event without refunds; registration fees may be treated as donations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
