Trail Running in the Pocatello Mountains
The Scout Mountain Ultras takes place in the mountains outside of Pocatello, Idaho, on the traditional lands of the Shoshone and Bannock. The event is centered at the Mink Creek Group site, which serves as the race headquarters and the finish line for all participants. The course features landscapes including stands of pines, aspens, and wildflowers.
Participants can choose from four distinct distances:
- 100 Mile: Features approximately 23,800 feet of vertical gain and loss.
- 50 Mile: A 53.8-mile route with over 10,900 feet of elevation change.
- 50k: Includes 7,400 feet of ascent and descent through Gibson Jack and West Fork.
- 23 Mile: A single-track loop that summits Scout Mountain with 5,400 feet of gain.
The event organizers implement several environmental initiatives to reduce the event's footprint. These efforts include waste reduction, re-thinking runner items to limit impact, and donating a portion of race proceeds to conservation groups. The event also promotes an inclusive environment, committing at least fifty percent of the registration field to women, femme, and non-binary athletes.
Course conditions can vary, with potential for snow and mud on the trails, particularly on the higher elevation sections such as the Scout Mountain summit. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
