Savannah SSOD (Stone Stairs of Death) Race
The Savannah SSOD Race is a charity running event in Savannah, GA, hosted by Rough Runners R4R INC. It offers timed races with two duration options and uses chip timing with ankle chips. The event raises funds for a family facing medical expenses; 100% of registration revenue minus costs and donations from the event go to that family.
The course is a repeated 1/3 mile loop that combines paved road, cobblestone, and an uneven stair section. Runners begin midway on the stairs going up and follow a route that includes turns onto Williamson Street, MLK Boulevard, and River Street before returning up the stair section. The stair section is only ascended during the loop and is never descended.
Participants may choose between the following race durations:
- 2 hours
- 1 hour
Male and female overall awards are given for both race durations. The 2026 recipient is a person who was previously treated for breast cancer and later diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer affecting the spine and pelvis; current care has shifted toward comfort measures. The event description notes that the local running community organizes the race to provide financial support during serious medical need.
