Saturn Running - Gilesgate
Gilesgate, United Kingdom • 30 Aug 2026
Event Overview
This is the Saturn Running GNR & Time Turner event for 2026. It takes place at Durham Amateur Rowing Club on the banks of the River Wear. The event can serve as a warm-up run before the Great North Run or simply as an opportunity to run along the river.
Course Details
The course is a trail run along a stretch of the River Wear, with views of Durham Cathedral. It is fully signed, so navigation is not required. The main lap distance is approximately 4.37 miles or 7 km, though this may change to a 3.28 mile loop depending on conditions. Within the lap, there are 3 km and 5 km turn points for younger runners to comply with age-related distance rules.
Event Format and Distances
This is a 7-hour time challenge event, giving participants control over the distance they run. The minimum distance is 3 km. Participants can complete as many laps as they wish, within the time limit. Standard distance milestones are:
- Half Marathon: 3 laps
- Marathon: 6 laps
- Ultra Marathon: 7 laps or more
- A 50 km distance is also available.
Participant Experience
All finishers who complete at least 3 km receive a themed medal. Additional distance pins for the medal ribbon are awarded for completing a half marathon or greater (Half-Marathon, Mega-Half, Marathon, 50km, Ultra). All finishers receive a goody bag, with a vegan option available. An aid station at the start/finish of each lap provides drinks and snacks, including vegan choices.
Venue and Logistics
The venue, Durham Amateur Rowing Club, has toilets and changing facilities. A baggage drop area is available near the start/finish, but it is unsecured and items are left at the participant's own risk. There is nearby free on-street parking and paid city centre parking. Final instructions are emailed 7-10 days before the event, and race numbers are collected on the day at registration. Headphones are permitted during the run.
