Each loop measures 6.79 miles with roughly 640 feet of elevation gain per loop. The course combines varied trail surfaces including rolling and rocky single-track, some double-track, gravel and short sections of pavement. Runners pass viewpoints with Payette Lake visible and fall foliage such as huckleberry, Rocky Mountain maple, aspen, and larch.
The event is organized as a fundraiser for Ponderosa State Park and supports local Northwest trails through registration fees, donations, and event proceeds. Organizers describe the races as low-impact: no paper products are used at the event and aid and prizes come from local businesses. The event aims to leave minimal trash at the end of race day.
Maps and detailed course information are not published in advance; the course is kept low-key and revealed to participants near race day. The race provides handmade bibs and finisher items and offers treats for canine participants. Campgrounds at the park operate on a first-come, first-served basis and overnight parking or car camping is only allowed in campsites. October weather in the mountains can be highly variable.
