Event overview

Runners v Riders is a traditional festive race held at Friday Woods, a military training ground on Bounstead Road in Colchester, Essex (CO2 0DF). Runners and cyclists race the same off-road course to compete for the Markham Cup. The first six finishers over the line share the cup. The senior course is a three-lap route covering approximately 3.5 miles. A junior event uses a shorter, two-lap route covering approximately 1 mile.

  • Junior - 2 laps (approx. 1 mile); free; sign-ups on the day
  • Senior - 3 laps (approx. 3.5 miles)

Logistics and entry

The race uses a mass start and takes place on very muddy, uneven terrain with ditches and water crossings. Collisions between runners and cyclists can occur; trail trainers are recommended and participants enter at their own risk. Registration and number collection take place on site before the races. Parking is limited but available; toilets are provided and there is no bag drop. Total places are limited to 110 and the event status is open. Early entry price until 21 Dec 2025 is £15; the organiser pays the listed service fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
