Run Wild Races
Run Wild Races is a biannual set of running and obstacle events held at the Metro Richmond Zoo on October 17, 2026. The event supports conservation of the Critically Endangered Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth; 100% of net proceeds from this event benefit that conservation effort in partnership with established organizations.
The event offers multiple race formats:
- Mini: 1 Mile through zoo pathways, mostly pavement.
- 5k: 3.1 Miles with dirt, mulch, grass, and gravel sections.
- Wild Ninja: approx 2 Miles with up to 42 obstacles.
Course and participant details are specific to each format. The Mini course follows the zoo pathways with a surface mix that is roughly 90% pavement, 5% gravel, and 5% dirt. The 5k begins inside the zoo and moves to perimeter trails, with winding turns, rolling hills, scenic bridges, and sections that pass near animal areas including the Cheetah Conservation Center. The Wild Ninja course uses obstacles inspired by American Ninja Warrior and animal survival challenges, awards points per obstacle, and grants free entry to the next Wild Ninja to those who complete all obstacles.
Ticket and age rules vary by event. Participants may receive free admission to the Zoo on race day and accompanying spectators are eligible for a 10% admission discount. Funds raised support island patrols, population monitoring such as radio tracking, and community education efforts for sloth conservation.
