The race route begins within view of Balmoral Castle and heads west alongside the River Dee. Runners follow a path through the Ballochbuie pine forest before starting a climb at the eight-mile mark toward the base of Lochnagar. The final three miles of the course consist of a descent back toward the castle, though the organizers note a final difficult section near the end. The terrain primarily consists of Land Rover tracks, though the final mile may be muddy.

Participants can expect the following features and services:

  • 15 mile trail race
  • Electronic timing and downloadable finisher's certificates
  • Finisher's medal
  • Distance markers at every mile
  • Two water stations located at Connachat House

The event has a maximum finish time of 3.5 hours. For safety and compliance with athletic rules, the use of standard headphones is not permitted, although bone conductor technology is allowed at the runner's risk.
