The Rodeo Trail Run of Austin is a multi-day trail event near Spicewood, Texas, hosted at the Grelle Recreation Area. The program includes set-distance races and endurance formats on Hill Country terrain that features rolling dirt roads and rugged footing.
Distances and formats:
- Half Marathon: 13.1 miles
- Marathon Ultra: 28 miles
- Backyard Ultra: 4.167 mile loop out and back
- 8 Hour Timed Run: repeated 4.167 mile loops
Several course segments are technical, with loose and exposed rock, short steep climbs and descents, and uneven footing. Frequent grade changes place emphasis on foot placement, pacing, and control over speed. Aid stations are fully stocked on the half and marathon ultra courses. Event materials note finisher recognition and a custom rodeo-style buckle; the eight hour event awards a buckle to runners who complete at least three loops.
The Backyard Ultra is a limited field event capped around 20 to 25 runners; if the field does not fill it converts to a timed endurance format. It follows an hourly lap format on the 4.167 mile loop, and it is a sanctioned Backyard event with official result tracking in the global database and on the Path to Bigs. The half marathon entry includes a trail-specific 12 week training plan. The event is organized with Healthy Kids Running Series Cedar Park and proceeds support their youth running programs.
