Race for Open Space is a one-day trail running event in Carmel-By-The-Sea, centered on Palo Corona Regional Park and raising funds for Big Sur Land Trust. The event offers multiple course options through conserved lands in Monterey County, including sections of Palo Corona backcountry and Mitteldorf Preserve on the longest route. The route scenery at this time of year includes green ridgelines and seasonal wildflowers.

Participants may choose from the following distances:

  • 1 mile Fun Run from Palo Corona to Southbank Trail
  • 5k Palo Corona Front-Ranch Lollipop
  • 12k Palo Corona to Whisler Wilson Overlook, out-and-back
  • 25k Palo Corona to Williams Canyon, out-and-back
  • 35k+ The Lunch Bench Lollipop, includes Mitteldorf Preserve

Course notes: routes are largely on non-technical fire roads; the 25k and 35k+ include multiple creek crossings. Courses are marked with colored ribbon and laminated signs at complex turns. Aid stations are staffed by Inside Trail Racing and supply a variety of foods and hydration options such as energy gels, snacks, Skratch Labs hydration, and water; basic first aid supplies are available at aid stations. All races are chip timed using MyLaps and Race Director with disposable chips on bibs.

Additional details: parking is provided at a nearby church lot. Dogs are allowed only on the 1-mile Fun Run and must be leashed and started from the back of the pack.
