Race For Open Space

Monterey, United States • 9 May 2026

Event overview

The Race for Open Space is a one-day trail running fundraiser on May 9, 2026 in Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA. The event supports Big Sur Land Trust and promotes access to parks and conserved lands in Monterey County. It is centered around Palo Corona Regional Park, with the longest course also visiting Mitteldorf Preserve. All courses run on conserved park and preserve lands, and a one-mile Fun Run is offered for participants of all ages.

Distances

  • 1 mile - Fun Run, Palo Corona to Southbank Trail
  • 5k - Front Ranch Lollipop, Palo Corona route
  • 12k - Out-and-back to Whisler Wilson Overlook
  • 25k - Out-and-back to Williams Canyon
  • 35k+ - Lunch Bench Lollipop, includes Mitteldorf Preserve

Course, timing and logistics

Courses are largely on non-technical fire roads; the 25k and 35k+ include multiple creek crossings. Hiking poles are allowed. Courses are marked with colored ribbon about every 200 meters; blue ribbons indicate a wrong-way route. Aid stations provide energy gels, snacks, soda, water, Skratch Labs hydration, salt tablets, seasonal fruit, and basic first aid supplies. All distances are chip timed using MyLaps and Race Director with disposable chips attached to bibs. Parking is free in the Community Church of the Monterey Peninsula lot adjacent to the start/finish area.

Policies

Registration is non-refundable and non-transferrable. Dogs are allowed only in the 1-mile Fun Run, must be on-leash, and must start at the back of the pack. The 35k+ course has a time limit; runners who miss the course cut-off may be moved to the 25k route. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
