Quarry Shack 5 Miler

Event Overview

The Quarry Shack 5 Miler is a nighttime Halloween running and walking event on October 31. It is the sixth annual edition of what is described as the Ghosttown Trail's first nighttime race. The event features a 5-mile run and a 5-mile walk.

Course Details

The course is an out-and-back route on the Rexis Branch of the Ghosttown Trail, starting at the Rexis trailhead next to an old train. Runners travel 2.5 miles out before turning around, crossing the Red Mill Bridge along the way. It is described as a completely closed course with no road crossings or intersections.

The trail is a rail trail with a 115-foot total elevation gain on the way out, described as a slow, steady incline, followed by a descent on the return. Participants are required to provide their own light source, such as a headlamp or handheld light. One water stop is located near the turn-around point.

Event Features

The race has a Halloween theme, with decorations along the course and a decorated turn-around point. Costumes are encouraged. Trail cameras may capture night-vision photos. A photo area is set up at the start/finish. Post-race snacks and water are provided. The event uses chip timing and has a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The event starts at 1069 Main St. in Vintondale, Pennsylvania. Registration prices increase after set deadlines. Children 10 and under can register for free until registration closes.
