The sixteenth annual Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd takes place in the J.T. Nickel Preserve near Tahlequah, Oklahoma in Cherokee County along the Illinois River. The event offers multiple distances for participants across a rural course in eastern Oklahoma.

The course mainly follows gravel country roads with a few climbs and tree covered sections. The landscape includes grassy prairies, oak and pine woodlands, narrow valleys, spring fed creeks, and tributaries that feed the Illinois River. The route runs beside or near local conservation areas including the Nickel Preserve and the Nichols Wildlife Preserve. Autumn foliage is noted as part of the event scenery.
Staffed aid stations are part of the event and many volunteers are experienced ultrarunners. A separate gravel ride and race is held on the Sunday of the event weekend and shares portions of the road with the running courses; options mentioned include a 30 mile single loop, a 60 mile two loop option, and a 70 mile route with an out and back section.
