The sixteenth annual Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd takes place in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, within the J.T. Nickel Preserve, a 17,000 acre privately protected conservation area that runs alongside the Illinois River. The preserve sits in the Cookson Hills and features steep slopes, narrow valleys, spring fed creeks, oak-hickory forest, pine woodland, savanna, shrub land, and prairie.

The running course follows gravel country roads with a few climbs and passes grassy prairies, oaks, pines, and tributaries that feed the Illinois River. Tahlequah is noted for its Native American tradition and history, which the event aims to reflect in newly designed belt buckles and finisher medals.
