Primary Children's Vertical Kilometer

The Primary Children’s Vertical Kilometer is a mountain running event that ascends the west face of Grandeur Peak. The course gains 1,000 vertical meters (about 3,280 feet) and finishes at the summit of Grandeur Peak.

Race day check-in takes place at the Eastwood Elementary School parking lot. The trailhead for the ascent is on the west face and the climb ends at the top of Grandeur Peak. After reaching the summit, participants may descend via the west face or jog down to the Churchfork trailhead and return toward the parking area along Pipeline. The summit can be icy or snowy; poles and spikes are suggested for those conditions.

The event is a fundraiser for Primary Children’s Hospital. One hundred percent of entry fees and donations are designated to support the hospital and its care. Registration is limited to up to 100 participants. Options include a General Runner entry with a minimum donation of $20 and a Sponsored Athlete entry requiring a $10,000 donation. There is also an option to register without running and provide a donation instead. The general entry fee is tax-deductible and suggested donation levels such as $100, $250, and $500 are listed.

This event is unofficial; the forest service does not issue a permit and no official event insurance is provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
