Pine Mountain Trail Run

The Pine Mountain Trail Run takes place within the FDR State Park in Pine Mountain, Georgia, located approximately one hour from Atlanta. This event, which held its first edition in November 1980, is recognized by Ultra Running Magazine as an "Old School Ultra" marathon. The course utilizes the Pine Mountain Trail system and starts from the Liberty Bell park area.

The event features two primary distances:

  • 19 Miles
  • 40 Miles

The terrain consists of rocky single-track trails that require agility and endurance. The topography features rolling hills with long gradual climbs rather than major individual ascents. Elevation on the trail system ranges between 899 and 1,395 feet. Underfoot conditions are often uneven due to rocks and leaf cover, and participants may encounter ankle-deep stream crossings depending on water levels.

The race environment is a public state park, and the trails remain open to other users, including hikers and scout groups, during the event. Because the run takes place in early December, participants may experience a wide range of weather conditions, from clear skies to rain, with temperatures historically fluctuating between 30 and 70 degrees. Due to the timing of sunrise and sunset, runners are required to carry safety lights and appropriate gear for cold or wet weather. Parking is available at the Liberty Bell park area, and a state park parking fee is required for all vehicles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
