The Dovedale Dipper
The Dovedale Dipper is a trail running and challenge walk event in the Peak District National Park, based in Hartington village. It offers two waymarked route options that explore the White Peak area, including the Dove and Manifold valleys and countryside on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border. The routes combine hills, valleys and village trails and are used by both runners and hikers.
Distances:
- Big Dipper : about 26 miles (marathon-plus route)
- Little Dipper : about 15 miles
The courses are not way-marked for the event; participants are responsible for navigation using provided step-by-step route instructions, downloadable GPX files and a printed map (Ordnance Survey 1:25k preferred, 1:50k minimum). Checkpoints and aid stations are placed on each route and will provide drinks and snacks; participants must reach checkpoints within their opening times or may be unable to continue.
Mandatory kit includes a whistle, emergency bivi bag or space blanket, magnetic compass, maps covering the route, suitable clothing and footwear, a waterproof jacket with taped seams, emergency food (at least 400 calories), at least 0.5 litre carrying capacity for fluid, and a fully charged mobile phone. Medical support and an experienced event team are provided. Prizes are awarded to the first three male and female finishers on each course, with veteran categories subject to minimum entries.
The event base is Hartington Village Hall. There is no parking at the venue; event parking is provided on the eastern side of the village about 400 metres away and requires a parking pass. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
