The Dovedale Dipper
The Dovedale Dipper is a trail event for runners and walkers in the Peak District National Park, based in the village of Hartington. The event offers two route options that explore the White Peak area on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border. The 2026 event is organised by Craggrunner; the event began in 2003 and has been held regularly since.
Distances:
- Big Dipper approximately 26 miles, anticlockwise route through Dove and Manifold valleys
- Little Dipper approximately 15 miles, shorter route with hilly and valley sections
The event base and HQ is Hartington Village Hall on Hide Lane. There is no parking at the venue itself; event parking is provided on the edge of the village about 400 metres away and requires a parking pass. Entries open early in the year, close a few days before the event if not sold out, and limited late entries may be available on the day with a supplement.
Participants must follow the designated route and check in at intermediate checkpoints that operate opening and cut-off times. The event provides aid stations with drinks and snacks, is cup free so participants must bring their own drinking vessel, and offers medical support and a hot meal at the finish. Mandatory kit includes a whistle, emergency bivi bag or space blanket, magnetic compass, appropriate maps (1:25,000 preferred), suitable clothing and footwear, waterproof jacket, emergency food, at least 0.5 litre fluid capacity and a fully charged mobile phone. The minimum age is 18. Dogs are not permitted and support runners who are not entered participants are not allowed. Prizes are awarded to the top finishers in each course and veteran categories; other finishers receive a certificate. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
