Trail Event in the Peak District
The Dovedale Dipper is a trail event for runners and walkers located in the Peak District National Park. The event is based in the village of Hartington and utilizes the Hartington Village Hall as the race headquarters. The routes explore the white peak area, including the Dove and Manifold valleys, crossing the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border.
Participants can choose from two distinct distances:
- 26 miles (The Big Dipper): A long-distance route covering approximately 27 miles, featuring views of hills and valleys.
- 15 miles (The Little Dipper): A shorter alternative that includes significant elevation changes.
The course is not way-marked with specific event signage. Participants are responsible for their own navigation using provided GPX files, written route descriptions, and a mandatory printed map. There are aid stations located at various checkpoints providing refreshments, though the event operates on a cup-free basis, requiring participants to carry their own hydration vessels.
Mandatory safety equipment includes a whistle, emergency bivi bag or space blanket, magnetic compass, waterproof jacket with taped seams, and at least 400 calories of emergency food. The event includes professional medical support and a hot meal for finishers at the village hall. Parking is available in a designated field a short walk from the headquarters for those with a pre-purchased permit.
All participants must be at least 18 years old. The event is held under a permit from the Trail Running Association and follows UK Athletics Rules. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
