Pat Dunbar Memorial
The Pat Dunbar Memorial is an open mountain race and a part of the NIMRA League. Organised by Newry AC, the event takes place in the Mourne Mountains area, starting and finishing at Leitrim Lodge. The course is classified as a medium distance mountain race.
- 13 km (8 miles) with 682 m (2240 ft) of elevation gain.
The route begins at the bridge on the path and follows the Mourne Way toward Rostrevor. Runners pass through the gate at Batt's Wall and follow forest roads and open mountain paths. The course includes significant checkpoints such as CP1 at the stone steps crossing the wall, Tievedockaragh, and CP2 in the forest. Participants then follow the river toward CP3 and proceed past the sheep pens to reach the summits of Pierce's Castle and Rocky before descending back to Leitrim Lodge.
While major junctions are marked, the course is not fully marked, and participants are expected to navigate using a map and compass. Mandatory equipment is required for all participants and will be checked before the start. The kit list includes a whistle, compass, map of the entire course, emergency rations, waterproof garments with full body protection, a hat, gloves, and a foil blanket.
The race uses a combination of checkpoint dibbers and marshals stationed at designated locations. Parking is available at the Leitrim Lodge carpark. The event is run under Athletics NI rules. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
