Event Overview

Pagan Trails is a trail running event based in Chagford, on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor. The location is described as where mythical Dartmoor meets the valleys of the Upper Teign and Bovey Rivers.

Distances and Course

The event offers two distances:

  • Marathon: Over 28 miles with more than 1500m of ascent.
  • Half Marathon: Over 14 miles with almost 700m of ascent.

Both routes are designed to visit many of the stone circles and pagan sites in this part of north Dartmoor, an area noted for ancient history and legends. The event takes place in midwinter conditions.

Logistics and Requirements

The start and finish for both races is at the Chagford Cricket and Football Club, which serves as the event headquarters. A tracker system is employed for the Marathon distance.

A mandatory kit list is required for all participants. Key items include a waterproof jacket, trail shoes, a backpack, capacity to carry fluid, a spare warm baselayer, hat, gloves, emergency food, a foil blanket, and a mobile phone. For the Marathon, waterproof leggings and a headtorch are also mandatory.

There are four full aid stations on the Marathon route and two on the Half Marathon route, which will be outdoor stations. Time limits are 8 hours for the Marathon and 4 hours for the Half Marathon, with cut-offs strictly enforced. The minimum age is 20 years for the Marathon and 17 years for the Half Marathon.
